The Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEADC) approached me with a request to create a highly detailed 3D map of Russia. The main challenge of the project is to combine the rigor of geographical data, geodetic accuracy, and the aesthetics of volumetric 3D graphics with the effect of a physical paper map for high‑resolution printing.

The customer’s tasks and requirements
The project’s goal was to clearly demonstrate the country’s key logistical and territorial arteries on a single printed surface.
Mandatory elements of an infographic:
- The borders and territory of the Russian Federation, with a clear color emphasis on the Arctic zone;
- The Northern Sea Route (NSR) — a key maritime artery;
- The Baikal–Amur Mainline (BAM) — a key land transport artery;
- A high level of detail, allowing the map to be viewed both in close‑up and at the scale of a printed banner.
Technical Challenges: Projection and Dealing with Distortions
The main challenge in geo‑art projects of this scale is the correct transformation of Earth’s spherical data into a flat raster without visual discontinuities or shifts.
- The WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) issue: the standard geographic coordinate system divides the territory of Chukotka and the 180th meridian, which is unacceptable when visualizing the entire territory of the Russian Federation as a single dataset.
- Working in QGIS: To solve the problem, the cartographic base was rebuilt and recalculated using a specialized cylindrical projected coordinate system. This made it possible to eliminate distortions in the northern latitudes and preserve the integrity of the geometry from Kaliningrad to the Bering Strait.
Pipeline for 3D visualization and artistic solutions
To move away from a dry vector scheme and give the map depth, a hybrid 3D pipeline was implemented:
- Working with terrain (DEM): Based on the current elevation maps (Digital Elevation Model), a true 3D terrain was generated (Height Maps / Displace).
- Light and shadow modeling: A custom shading map (Ambient Occlusion & Shadow Maps) has been created to emphasize mountain ranges, ridges, and lowlands.
- Bathymetry and isolines: To demonstrate the depths of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, a vector grid of bathymetric isolines was created, which added graphical density and detail to the map.
- Texturing and final look: a procedural paper texture map has been applied to the final render. This smoothed out the procedural nature of the 3D graphics and gave the map the appearance of a noble, physical print.
Result
The customer received a high‑resolution layout ready for large‑format printing, combining cartographic accuracy, clear infographics for presentation purposes, and artistic 3D visualization.
