I edited my blog from a trip to India and I wanted to make a map. Initially, I wanted to use Google maps to simplify the task, however, the result did not like at all. At the same time, to make a detailed map in Cinema4D, you need to make a lot of effort, which is unlikely to pay off. What is worth finding a map of Goa in vector with all names.
In addition, a little tired of the licked 3D graphics, I want something more tactile, something from the real world. The ubiquitous use of 3D graphics and AI has already tired the audience.
This case describes the process of creating a stylized map animation, where modern digital graphics turn into tactile ‘paper’ graphics.
1. Concept and visual style
The main idea is to get away from the flat view of Google Maps or OpenStreetMap aside Vintage aesthetics. The card should be felt by a physical object on which typographic ink literally “be out”. Complemented by sound effects.
2. Preparation of the cartographic basis
- Data collection: Use of public maps of India and detailed map of Goa state received from vector.

- Texturing: To convert the ‘numbers’ to ‘paper’ applied overlays in the mode Multiply and overlay:
- Base Layer: Texture of old thick paper with small patches of fibers.
- Microrelief: Layer with creases and wrinkles to give volume.
- Color correction: The palette shifts to warm, slightly faded tones.

3. Working with typography (ink effect)
For location and state names used Printed ink texture.
- Technique: Using Luma Matte. Typographic embossing texture is applied to the text mask. This creates the effect that the letters were printed on the machine and the paint was unevenly absorbed into loose paper.

4. Animation structure and transitions
Scene 1: Scale of the country
Showing the general map of India. Smooth panning, emphasis on the location of Goa. In order for the viewer to understand the geographical context, GOA is distinguished by contour stroke and coloring.
Scene 2: The Flip
Instead of a conventional zoom, the effect was used Page turning. This enhances the feeling of working with the physical atlas.
- Realization: Effect
CC Page Turn– Animation of layer bending in 3D space.
Scene 3: Goa Detail
The state map opens. Here there is a division into North and South Goa.
- Visual reception: Has a shading with printed ink texture.
Typography animation
Used flat animation of inscriptions – the effect of the appearance of letters from behind the invisible border, which are superimposed on the effects of printing ink. Allows you to make the animations neat.

The image also shows the edges of the lines and text that are not even. As if they were taking the shape of paper.
5. Final touches
- Camera: Adding a small camera ‘Wiggle’ and depth of field (depth of field) to focus on specific card details when zooming. And also used the technique – Overlap, when the next movement of the camera begins even before the end of the past. Which creates a more pleasant impression, a mechanism is removed, the movements of the camera seem more natural.
- Additional elements: Overlaying images of beaches in the form of Polaroid shots in 3D space, as if the photos are being thrown onto a table.
Result
Thanks to the multi-layer overlay of textures and imitation of typographic printing, the standard map has turned into a unique artistic element that sets the atmosphere for the entire travel video.
